Weekly Investing IINsights

Our weekly Investing IINsights are a resource we provide for you since we’re doing the legwork for our own process anyway. Our portfolios perform better when we check in on our stocks, what’s happening economically, and what macros/sectors will be affected by those changes.

Tim encourages you to learn to do this yourself so you don’t have to rely on anyone. But for those of you who are more like me and have bandwidth issues because of everything else you’re doing, you can use Tim to help fill you in.

What Each Weekly Update Provides

Each update consist of three sections:

Economic News

Investor sentiment and therefore the markets are greatly affected by what’s happening in economic news. So it’s vital to keep the pulse on metrics, news, and sentiments because that directly affects how your portfolio will perform and signals how to position yourself for where things are headed.

Tim takes the time to read the economic reports that come out and translate it into what actually matters for investing. This gives you a much better picture than whatever agenda is splashed across the headlines to induce emotional trading.

He’s also really good at seeing patterns and comparing them to what’s happened in the past. He’ll tell you exactly what he’s doing based on the information, good or bad.

Top 10 Investments Going Ex-Dividend Next Week

You make more money when you buy stocks that are undervalued because you not only get a lower price and higher payouts because you have more shares, but you also get a safety margin that prevents emotional selling if prices drop. Plus dividends reduce losses.

Tim’s always running stock screeners and looking at company metrics to help him monitor the value of investments. This helps him keep tabs on what’ in our portfolios and it’s how he finds better investment opportunities.

He has noticed that most “top stock” lists don’t provide anything useful. They either focus on overvalued growth stocks and Aristocrats or the highest yielding without taking risk into account.

So his top 10 contenders have to have high enough yield, a profit margin that shows they can pay their dividend, and be undervalued.

If you’re looking to invest your money, this is a great place to start looking versus getting overwhelmed by the thousands of stocks available. Tim’s already screened and qualified your options. You’ll see that we buy what’s on the list if we have liquid cash.

The ex-dividend calendar helps us narrow the scope and can benefit from timing if used strategically. It’s also how Tim sometimes finds new tickers.

Portfolio Updates

We have a few portfolios with different investing approaches.

  • A conservative Retirement Portfolio (my mom’s that we manage)
  • A less conservative Vanning Portfolio (our “retirement”/van life portfolio)
  • A high yield/high risk Income Portfolio (our supplemental paycheck)

We are trying to live off of our Income Portfolio as long as possible to let our Vanning Portfolio compound and grow before we start tapping it.

Because we’re trying to maximize our earning potential on our small portfolio of about $250k, Tim uses aspects of several strategies combined. We do value investing, dividend growers, and contrarian investing. That’s why you’ll see him sell good stocks for better ones.

Documenting what trades he makes each week helps us look back and understand what we did and why. It also let’s you see what we’re doing and our strategy in action.

We hope this helps you build your portfolio and feel confident in your own stock decisions.
